Berkeley Marina

Most people launch off the the of the dock, but some people go over the rocks. There is also another dock a bit further west that is used primarily by the Cal Sailing Club. When you launch here you will be in a wind shadow, and you will need to slog out to the windline. It may seem like forever and a day, but if you time it you'll see that it actually takes under a minute. One way to avoid this is to launch at His Lordships, but there maybe be broken glass at that launch and you still have to swim the gear out a few meters to get to the wind.

The wind is usually better upwind here. If you get bogged down near the freeway you'll just get less and less wind. Better to slog a little upwind than to plane downwind. Once you are on a line with the restaurant (His Lorships) the wind will be much more reliable.

Berkeley is a pretty safe place to sail. The only real issue here is that sometimes the wind will simply shut off with absolutely no warning. I've actually done a "self-rescue" here, rolle everything up, lay it on the board, and paddle it in.

If you get more adventurous you can sail upwind and go to all kinds of places. The Olympic circle, Treasure Island, the end of the pier, etc.
