Windsurfing near Cabin Creek
- Jackson Creek Landing, MD (3 km)
- Terrapin State Park (11 km)
- Kentmorr (14 km)
- Queen Anne Marina (14 km)
- Sandy Point (18 km)
This launch has some drawbacks, but if Queen Anne's and Kentmorr are closed, it ends up being the only public launch in the area for southwest winds.
You need a Queen Anne's County launch permit. There is info about launch permits here: Jackson Creek.
Yahoo seems to have the best satellite image of this place: Yahoo Satellite Maps (http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/index.php#maxp=search&trf=0&mvt=h&lon=-76.2114179134369&lat=38.943610218411&mag=1)
From the satellite photo, you can see the rectangular dock looking structure. This is actually a big, ugly, asphault-topped structure surrounded by seawall that you can drive on. On the back side of the structure, there is a small grassy area and a small boat landing. You can use the landing to launch, but the water there is often pretty shallow while the mud on the bottom is pretty deep. The altenative is to launch from the dock. This would be a lot easier if the pilings were spaced a bit farther apart, but it is doable. Using the dock to come back in is also doable, but in windier conditions, it might be better just to go around to the landing.
Beginners would be plenty safe at this launch, but the dock/landing situation could make it too much of a pain in the butt.
Water depths: close-in it is knee to shoulder deep.
Water conditions: It's pretty flat, as this is a somewhat protected launch.
Winds: South-Southwest to West should be good. I suspect this place might setup nicely for some good spring to early summer thermals, but I haven't been there to see it.
Amenities: There are no facilities at this place, and there's really not much space to do anything off the water besides maybe fishing.
