Celilo has a beautiful park setting and an easy launch for the classic Gorge Westerlies. Chop can be crazy here, but sail down by the concrete boat launch ramp and it lines up better.Best from June through September.A poor site for kites because of brush and trees.
There is ample parking since the park doubles as a road-side rest stop. There are also restrooms, but the water is not potable.
Celilo works best in a SW wind. It can turn on suddenly in mid-late afternoon when gorge weather is warm, and jump 2-3 sail sizes in 20 minutes. Be aware that the eastern view is limited by a bend in the river and the man-made breakwater. Barges come very close to the launch side of the river, and lately have not been good at blowing a warning horn. Look twice on each reach.
