This spot is close to being history. The Duck-Inn restaurant was closed in 2005 and dismantled recently to make room for condo construction. At this point (Sep 06), construction has not started yet, the launch is still accessible. Parking is an issue though as the old parking lot has been blocked off.
Advanced to expert tidal sailing.
NE to N is the best, NW is onshore and reasonable. If it swings E, the wind on the inside is blocked by apartment highrises. On the inside is where the current runs - the launch is right at the narrow Lynnhaven Inlet. CHECK THE TIDE CHART. When the current is running out (up to 5kt) against the NE wind it pushes waves out and generates magic carpet ride sections. On the outside waves break on sandbars where you can stand, even hit bottom at low tide. With the tide constantly changing conditions, no run is alike. Bay Chop beyond the sandbars. Weird currents over the sandbars, washing machine sections. Have your waterstarts wired.
HAZARD: STRONG CURRENT. When it's running in, you're being pushed towards the inlet where the bridge spanning across the inlet and other buildings make the wind lift off the water. Not for the faint of heart if the wind dies and you have to swim back against the current, carrying you either out towards open waters or in towards the inlet. CHECK THE FORECAST, come in if in doubt unless you make must-do pivot jibes in freaky currents.
The local kiteboard crew advises against getting near the inlet. Windsurfing can be epic on a solid NE which allows you to time the tide.
