We usually sail here in the winter months when the southernly winds are coming in from approaching storms (southeast to southwest winds are onshore here). Both windsurfers and kiters go out there. Go to the very end of the park by the harbor entrance to launch. The beach is somewhat protected, northwest swells have to wrap all the way around. The surf can still get pretty big, and it closes out unless it's huge. I have sailed it on about head high swell on the outside and it was great. I have seen people sail it in mast high conditions and 30 knot winds, as the launch is pretty sheltered. This place is usually on from about late November into March, and you have to time it pretty well unless you enjoy sailing in the rain (hey, you're wet anyway)!
