Summary
Dundrum Bay is an excellent beginner area or flat water blasting bay. Its relatively shallow and is great for learning in.
Tides
Ideally you want to go at least 1 ½ hour before high tide as the water can drop quite quickly. A tide below 3.0m isn't worth sailing to be honest. Tooshallow. An average height is 3.3m When you go into 3.5m, 3.6m.up to 3.9m these are high spring tides. If you get a high wind with one of these….your in business for windsurfing the bay.
Safety
Never windsurf near or close to the "mouth" of the bay. Standing in Dundrum car park looking out over the bay the mouth is situated directly ahead. You can see the land on both sides where the water channels in from the sea. Always sail well left of this in the bay between Ballykinlar & Dundrum. This is the safest, deepest and best area to sail in. When the tide goes out and starts to withdraw the mouth of the bay provides a strong bottleneck.
Best winds
This location is sailable in all wind directions. The Ballykinlar side is however a little cleaner and provides good rigging areas.
