Directions

From Raleigh, NC, the drive is getting easier and easier. I-540 is almost done to a point where it will be useful. Route 64 has been improved dramatically. Take 64 to 158 to 12. Once on Route 12, follow this south to Frisco. The other option would be to take the ferry over and follow 12 up to Frisco. Friscowoods has a large sign, and is on the North side of the road.

When To Sail

Friscowoods Campground is a good location for accessible windsurfing. There is a bit of a walk out through the shallow water (especially with the larger fins we are using these days). If you use a weed fin, you'll have less of a walk. The windier it is, the less of a walk because you'll most likely be using a smaller fin. Once out there though, the sailing is quite exciting. Great winds in the Spring! Sailing at Friscowoods is good in most wind directions (NE, N, NW, W, SW, SSW). You can expect Friscowoods to be a great place to teach someone to sail in any wind direction because it is so shallow.

Again, because it is so shallow, this is a great location to work on jibes of all sorts. You can throw an aggressive jibe in 1-foot deep water, crash and burn and do a beach start to get going without wearing yourself out! And the chop away from shore is perfect for those learning to chop hop.

When Canadian Hole has too much chop in a SW wind, Frisco's chop is more predictable and easier to sail.

Where to Stay

You can camp with a tent or rent a small cabin. Be aware that camping in a tent means dealing with the black flies and mosquitos.
