Kruzof Island, Sitka Alaska This area is perhaps one of the best locations for kiting in South East Alaska. Indeed one of the only. SE has little in the way of the large sandy beaches and with so much of SE sheltered there is little ocean swell for wave fun. Sitka however is located on the pacific coast side of Baranof Island. This means it not protected from the wind and waves the way the rest of SE is. The best kiting is found on Kruzof Island, a large island some 15 miles off-shore from Sitka. Kruzof Island is best known for it massive volcano, which is visible from Sitka on a clear day.
Sitka has probably only one kiter but a number of dedicated surfers whos base of operations is the local surf shop called Cold Salt Surf Shop (www.coldsalt.com, 329 Harbor Dr. Suite 105. Sitka Alaska 99835, (907) 738-1348). They are not able to legally guide to the island but often something informal can be worked out as they head out to the many locations on the island to surf 2 days a week in summer and 5 days a week in winter.
The wind in this area can be a bit gusty, so it would be best to watch the forcast closely and wait for some solar wind rather than head out in a low pressure.
