High wind destination from December to April, strongest winds in Jan and Feb. Wind blows 20-40+knots from North'ish directions. Windsurf style is mainly bump & jump and strongly favours port side jumping.
You can choose from 2 venues for rentals and launching: Tico Wind: http://www.ticowind.com/arenal_general.htm Tilawa: http://windsurfcostarica.com/
The two venues are on opposite sides of the lake near the western end. Tilawa launches form the southern shore and Tico from the northern. From the Tilawa launch the wind appeared sideshore from the east. During a week's say, the wind varied from 4.7 to "stupid", where I was tailwalking on a 3.2.
The Tilawa launch itself is mostly clay and somewhat slippy when wet. The water is shorty warm and fresh. It was mostly cloudy with mist and occassional rain during our stay, but this didn't impact the wind strength.
Note the walk to the launch from Hotel Tilawa is about 1/2 mile. Pleasant in the morning, a long climb back up the hill after a day of hanging on to tiny sails.
