Langstone Harbour can really only be sailed 2 hrs either side of high tide as it starts to dry out after this. If the sea front is macking with a huge shore break this is where to head until the tide drops back. Watch out for the reef though just off shore. Even on big springs it is only just below the surface and WILL claim your fins!! You can sail here in most wind directions, East being bang offshore. Very much a freestyle or freeride spot. The best place to head in a Northerly. Happy sailing, Tez (focuswatersports.com)
I've found the best wind directions for this location are west, south-west or north-west. You then have the choice of good sailing within the lagoon or outside in Langstone Harbour. Any easterly component to the wind direction creates a wind-shadow in the lagoon and invariably blustery conditions further out. The point about the sand-bar claiming fins is well made. At low tide, the western end of Hayling Island sea-front is the place to go. Here you have a natural, shallow-water lagoon between the beach and an enormous sand-bar that stretches out in a south-easterly direction making it ideal for high-wind blasting. Hope this helps.
