Windsurfing near LEO CARILLO

Best summer south swell wavesailing site north of San Carlos and South of Jalama. Watch out for surfers and lifegaurds though. This was one of the original windsurfing meccas in Southern California. Bring your surfboard in case wind isn't blowing. Please bring a happy disposition in case the surfers yell at you, and always observe proper right of way and give surfers at least 20 feet safety zone. Help us protect this very special wave sailing site!

When it is really windy and you want big winter surf go 1 mile north-west to County line. It goes off after winter fronts blow through.

Just downwind from the wave sailing area is a slalom area. The waves break on shore so there are no surfers there. On a strong south swell the first 100 yrds can be Challenging, I've seen many a broken mast stuffed into a trash can. During the summer months the winds will consitantly blow 12-20 mph, sometimes more. Since the surfing area is protected from the wind by a rocky point there can be 50 surfers out when the wind is blowing 20 mph and the surf is 6 ft and over, all other surfing spots will be blown out.

On a weekend with good wind and surf there will be 10-15 windsurfers, 5-8 kiters and 50+ surfers all sharing an area maybe half a mile wide, it can get kind of crazy. The state lifeguards don't take any baloney and will call in law enforcement when necessary so lay low. Parking is on Pacific Coast highway with no parking directly ajacent to the beach because of some protected vegitation. This usually means a long walk with all your gear on the side of a 4 lane highway with people driving by at 45 mph +. There is also parking at the state campground across the road for $5 and a tunnel going under the road.
