Lynfield Speed Run on the Manuaku harbour - is probably the fastest piece of water in NZ and is up there as one of the great speedsailing locations in the world.

It works best in a true South Wester - where the wind gets accelerated through Manukau Heads. It can be sailed from S to SW but anything much more west than true SW the wind becomes unstable and a bit ugly. Tides - 2 hours either side of dead low tide, and the lower the tide, the flatter the water will be along the edge of the sandbar.

Access is a bit of a pain, but it's worth it! You launch from the clubhouse at Blockhouse bay - with parking a few hundred metres away (watch out for valuables left in your vehicle as some of the locals are a bit dodgy). The launch site (carry your gear under the clubhouse) is covered with really sharp oysters - so be warned! Wear booties or shoes!

The course itself is about 1km south out into the harbour, along the visible channel marking poles. Basically launch from the clubhouse and sail in a southerly direction, staying up on the wind. Turn downwind when you get across the far channel and head for the bar. When the tide is right you can sail very close (a few metres) from the edge of the bar in super flat water. You then sail back upwind and do it over and over again!

A word of caution - when Auckland is getting 25 plus knots - it can be 40-50 knots on the Manukau. This is no place for beginners and intermediates! Also, the tides on the Manukau can do 7 knots - and when wind is against tide, the chop can get really nasty - remember it is a very long walk home across mud flats - be prepared!
