Mariner Park in Homer is a great place to kitesurf. In Homer, if the sun is shinning, the wind is blowing. We often have choppy waves and if sunny, the wind can blow 10-25. The best part about kitesurfing in Homer, and Alaska in general is the huge tides we have. Homer area has the second largest tides in the world which means the terrain changes all the time. as the water covers a sand bar on an incoming tide, a temporary wave will form, then be gone 10 minutes later. if the water wraps around a spit and fills in the backside, one can surf perfectly flat water until the spit is covered and the waves take over again.
You can also kite down the length of the Homer spit (about 5 mile). The wind blows on the beach with a slight angle toward the end of the Spit. The best direction i from Meriner Park to the tip of the spit. you could hitch back or get a cab. Sometimes the wind dies a little in the middle of the spit before picking up after the midway point.
Traveler Terpening and Trace Carlos live in Homer and host a kitesurfing festival there each year at summer solstice. The festival usually spans 1 week around June 21st.
