Windsurfing near Mornington

Table of contents

Mornington

Due to the variable directions that the beaches face around this point in the bay, the location offers some good alternatives to other local areas.

Mornington Pier:Plenty of parking except on busy summer weekends. Windsurfers can rig on the grassy area near the carpark and launch either from the boat ramp to avoid the aggressive shore break or from the beach on calmer days. Decent bay wave riding in North and North-West winds from the pier over to Mills Beach.

Kiters launch from pier side of beach in a N or NW and Mills Beach in a W.

Mother's beach:Dirt carpark off the esplanade. Excellent and safe location to sail straight out and in during strong Westerlies. Offers calmer waters for the first 100m because of the pier. Great location in the occassional 40knot Westerly.

For adventurous windsurfers this is a great launch in SW winds because the point sticks out further than any other in this quarter of the bay. However be prepared to deal with flukey winds for the first 400m until you get past the pier.

Local Hazards

Reef half way along Mother's Beach close to shore. In N & NW large waves can pin sailors to the cliffs between Mothers and Mills Beach. In the same winds avoid the shore break unless a confident gyber.
