Windsurfing near Mud Lake

Mud Lake is on a wildlife management area. sailing and kite are allowed at the east end of the res. spring and fall are best but summer storms can be fun. get off I-15 at the Salmon and Rexburg exit head west about 8 miles till you see the mud lake wildlife management area follow the signs. once you enter the management area about 1 mile in you will see a parking area next the the water. rig up and have fun. check the wind before you go http://www.noaa.inel.gov/WindV/ The usual launch site for "CLUB MUD" is on the East side of the North shore. Drive West past the most prominent pull-out to the next pull-out. You will see a path cleared to the water and a grass/weed rigging area. If you arrive at a campground (with decent outhouses) you have driven too far. In the summer, bugs can be a problem, but only when the wind dies. A weed fin is sometimes needed, especially in high winds (>4.0) when weeds are uprooted and swept downwind. Despite it's name, Mud Lake has a sandy bottom and a beutiful view of nearby Saddle Mountain which is often snow covered into July.
