cnalimondom An afternoon seabreeze is good and reliable on a sunny day but when the southerly picks up (not as common) it can be a blast! We don't really get easterly or westerly. Summer is the best time of year because thats when the winds are the most reliable. During winter, there are usually only 3 or 4 really good days. The most common place to see windsurfers is in the major estuary north of town. You can get about two hours of fun in on an average tide. At neep tides, make sure you have a wave or freestyle fin because it can get very shallow (knee deep average). The estuary provides the biggest area and is flat water all the time because of a boulder bank seperating it from the bay but when the tide is out I suggest you go to the north side of the port, this is still in the haven but there is a very deep channel but it doesn't provide much room. The main beach can be rather nice but is not recommended for beginners or more advanced beginners but for advanced sailors it can be amazing when the wind is really howling. There is a big wide sand bank at the beach with plenty of chop for bump and jump but this is normally occupied by gangs of kitesurfers and it's difficult for windsurfers to get in there amongst the lines. Nelson doesn't reguarly get high winds, max 20knots from the sea breeze.
