North Ricketts (a.k.a Rocketts) is one of those secret little windsurf spots that's a real bay gem.
Its also worth getting some local knowledge to sail.
Best wind is S-WSW: good on a seabreeze if it comes in this far south, great on a wind change if it stays in and the waves start coming. Check Moorabbin wind site for a SW of at least 15 knots before bothering, even if the Beacon is showing 20.
Rig infront of the car park at the Beaumaris yacht club. Parking ticket is required.
Sailing is straight out "through the sticks": two marker bouys showing the location of a gap in the reef here. On a low tide be careful - it is shallow between the sticks as well.
The green reef marker offshore signifies an area as shallow as 1.8 metres, even though it is 300 metres + offshore. Good bay waves roll up here. Good bay waves are also just outside the sticks. Follow a local if you're here the first time. Its cheaper than buying new fins/head.
Inside the sticks is the gybe-o-torium. Flat water and a great place to learn tricks. However, watch out, as stingrays also like this area and people have been stung - and sent to hospital! Again, watch the line of the locals as there are shallow bits inside here.
Locals dont bite.
