Now called "Old Lighthouse Beach" since they have moved the lighthouse to its new location. Which is great because now there is plenty of parking! This spot pumps out a wide variety of port tack wavesailing conditions. Often fun, sometimes daunting, occasionally epic this spot has claimed more equipment than any other spot on the island. When its big, bring your spare mast. The sand bar south of the jetty constantly changes here affecting the wave shape. You really don't know what it going to be like until you go. Launch just 50 yards south of the jetty. Often light wind here on the inside makes it a challenge to squeak out thru the white water, rig big for the inside if its your first time sailing this spot and watch for current heading south which gets stronger the further south of the jetty. If you don't make it out the first try head back to the beach and walk it back up to the jetty and try again other wise you'll never get out. Don't let all this advice stop you, sailing here can be a lot of fun, once you are just outside of the jetty, the wind fills in, sail out, pick up a swell and chase it back to the break, the wave here is often powerful especially around low tide. When your ride is done kick out and scream right back up to the pick up point in just one tack.

When to go: This spot works best on a North or NE wind. Often the first day of a NE wind is good. The swell can build very quickly here, just a few hours of NE wind and it can go from being flat to chest to head high. How to get there: Easy access for all and probably the best parking and rigging spot on the island. From Rt 12 in Buxton, take the road leading into the Cape Hatteras National seashore after about 1 mile take the first left then another immediate left and enter a parking lot, you'll see a ring of stone which was the old lighthouse location. Park and rig on the nice grass that divides the two parking lots. Short easy carry over the dune to the launch area just south of the first jetty.
