Windsurfing near Pt Chevalier

Nearby Windguru Forecasts

With Auckland's occasional NW winds, this is a real good spot if you windsurf with W or SW wind at a spot closer to home. But if you live nearby, you're lucky as this site is exposed to most of Auckland's prevailing winds. It is tidal with a 200m walk to the water at low tide. Bit slipperly, but not overtly so.

Although it's tidal, the sailing at low tide can be exceptional, with excellent flat-water, speed-sailing conditions. It is an ideal spot to learn water starts and gybes as the water depth is fairly constant at any tide, enabling you to put your feet on the bottom when you need to. This is also a safe place to give advanced beginners their first taste of windsurfing at sea, or at least in more choppy conditions.

In strong northwesterlies and full tide quite a chop builds up, making for good jumping and chop bashing.

Wind direction

Good in southeasterly to northerly winds.

Hazards

Oysters beds on the mudflats.

Just inshore of the black buoy is a rocky reef which is higher than the rest of the mudflats. It's claimed many a fin from unsuspecting sailors espcially during an outgoing tide.
