This beach gets the cleanest breaking waves for many miles on the Lake Michigan shoreline and attracts a lot of surfers. The line-ups between the jetties sometimes have as many as 20 people. Windsurfing this beach can be tricky because the launch area is pretty sheltered. But in a strong southerly in the fall, you can get some full-on wave sailing here -- blasting up the smooth ramps and hitting the lips. Don't forget your wetsuit and be on the look-out for surfers. Easterlies are pretty rare on the lake and northerlies are blocked by the trees around the North Point parking lot. Word of warning on the breeze out of the west -- if it's strong, it can blast through the trees atop the bluff and accelerate with impressive force down the hill, blowing hard by the time it hits the water. This breeze is sailable, but it blows directly offshore. So it's not for beginners. The lake is cold and big and you don't want a breakdown on an offshore breeze here.
