Windsurfing near Sprague Lake Recreation Association

Sprague Lake is a warm water lake approximately 6 miles long and 1 mile wide. It is relatively shallow at 10-18 feet deep, but there are minimal "fin hazzards" except close to shore. It is on the plains about 40 miles west of Spokane and just to the south of the I-90.

It is probably the best overall windsurf and kiting location in the Greater Spokane Area, however it is not heavily used. Unlike many locations in the Spokane Area, the winds are not inhibited by mountains. The frequent wind direction on Sprague Lake is out of the west or southwest.

The best winds are in the spring and very early summer. In late summer the lake can get fairly weedy and the water levels drop somewhat. At lower water levels fins need to be watched a little more closely.

There are two launch locations on the lake as of summer 2008. The best is probably the Four Seasons Campground which charged a less than $5 fee and provided a grassy launch area on the west side of their property. The owners are very friendly and there are rest room facilities available.

Directions to Four Seasons Campground: Take exit #245, which is 35 miles west of Spokane, off of the I-90 freeway. Proceed south and turn right on "4th Street" towards Sprague town. Go one block; turn right on "B Street". Then, turn left on "1st Street" and follow the road through town. On the outskirts of town, take the fork to the right. From this point, our resort is 6 miles away. The road will take you over the railroad tracks and then under I-90. Take the first left on "Lake Rd." which goes behind the rest area. Follow parallel to the freeway until the road veers to the right and then along wheat fields. Turn left on "Bob Lee Rd.", which is just before the four storage grain silos. You will go over I-90 and drop right into the resort.

The other location is the State Fishing Ramp on the south side of the lake. One needs to make sure they have a fish and game access permit from a State Licensing office before they get there as there is no way to buy them at the site. You can get a fairly long reach from this location by sailing to the east of the Island.
