Summers Bay Lake, Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
Description: This is a lake just inland from Summers Bay. The lake is fresh water and is relatively shallow except for the middle which is over 10 feet deep. The lake is about 1/ mile long with spectacular tundra hill rising on three sides and ahead is the Berring Sea. This is a very safe place to kite because there are few rocks of any size, there is a good landing and launching are and a small dirt road travels the length of the the lake so rescue or pick up is easy.
Wind: The wind in this area can be a little crazy at times, but i can also be very good and strong. Summers in the Aleutians often see South wind. For this area, that means overland wind. The wind gets funneled down and can really rip across the lake. The wind is often higher than than the surface of the water so sometimes you can not feel the wind as strongly as your kite will catch it up higher. 20 knotts is not uncommon in the evenings here.
Directions: Drive toward the dump from Unalaska. The road passes the dump and after another 2 or so miles you will reach a black sand dune and bridge. this is the lake.
Hazards: Few. At the end of the lake is a bridge and some rocks. These would only be a problem if you were totally out of control. The wind can be gusty here.
