The Gorge is awsome! Perhaps the best sailing spot in the world. The wind is a consistent 20-40 from June-August. July is the best bet for high winds; In June the wind is just getting started, plus the water's still pretty chilly- most people wear full wetsuits. August can be temperamental, with some stretches (no longer than a day or two) of no wind. But, when there is no wind, there's still plenty to do to keep busy. When it's not blowing in the Gorge, it's normally windy at the coast, only 1.5-2 hours away. And the coast is, of course, beautiful as well, and well worth the trip. There's plenty of good places to rent from and take lessons- Big Winds is my favorite. I took a lesson from them a while ago, and my instructor was wonderful, plus the quality of gear rental and knowledge at the shop far exceeded my experiences at other shops in Hood River and Maui. Hood River is a lively town in the summers. And the quality of people you meet there is great- everybody's got a passion for some outdoor persuit, from windsurfing and kiteboarding to mountain biking, rock climbing, running, photography... anything and everything it seems.
