The Hook and Wells Island offer two distinct sailing venues. The Hook is a hook shaped breakwater with parking on top. Inside the hook is a protected area for beginners and lessons. To the west of the hook is another shallow, sandy bottomed area partially protected by Wells Island. There can be a big wind shadow close to the island.

The north side of the hook parking area is a popular kite launch, so watch out for lines and kiters.

Sail from the Hook out to the main channel to find clean winds, big swell and sparse crowds. It's a pain to get through the shadow of the island, but rig big and try not to fall in when shlogging out through the gusts. Once you find clean wind in the channel, you can sail upwind to the sandy beaches on north side of the island to add downhaul and tune for what you find there.

This area of the channel is usually sparsely populated, has clean wind and sweet swell. You can look west to the Hatchery and see the wall-to-wall sails - or even sail there is a few reaches if you like. Don't stray too far downwind, as the wind tends to lighten up the further east you sail.

If you launched from the Hook, take a blasting broad reach past the tip of the island to get back. Sometimes you can stay on a plane to get back to the Hook.
