Windsurfing near The Landings Beach

This beach unfortunately is a private beach. Only residents of the Landings and their guests can use the beach. So if you know a resident there who likes windsurfers it's an ideal spot for windsurfing on the Potomac River. If not, check out Tall Timbers Marina just north of here. There is virtually no boat traffic and there is about 20 miles of fetch when the wind comes from the west and northwest (optimally 290 degrees). Winds from the south are good too. The beach is rather small, only about 600 feet. Luckily there is a about a mile of beach down river separated by a small channel. Winds higher than 20mph from the northwest generate 3 to 5 foot waves. The best time to windsurf here is September-Late November and March-Late May. The river is approximately 4 to 5 miles across, perfect for seemingly endless tacks. If anything breaks out there plan on swimming a long way, there is usually very little boat traffic. The currents aren't particularly bad, but the wind will blow you down the river at a pretty fast rate.
