The Washout is a semi-paved oceanside parking area located about 5 miles south of the Oregon Inlet Bridge, and about 3 miles north of the Boiler. In 2009, two sandbars have formed providing fun wavesailing conditions for both big surf days as well as smaller conditions. A predominant SSW wind this year provides clean side-off conditions at the Washout with long lines which form from the southern takeoff point though the launch area with a kickout just north of the launch before hitting the second northern takeoff bar.
Land orientation works best on SSW or southerly wind. If conditions in Avon or points further south are messy and/or questionable, the Washout is the first point north where the land swings back west provide solid side-off wavesailing. NW can also work at the Washout, however any easterly winds are not recommended.
If you are heading south along Pea Island after crossing Oregon Inlet bridge and see a red 4runner or other vehicles with windsurfing gear, stop by and check it out! For more on the Washout, see [url: http://www.obxbeachlife.com]
