VIGANJ, a village and small harbour to the west of the southern coast of the Peljesac Peninsula, 7 km west of Orebic, accross the water from Korcula Old Town.Viganj, situated in a large cove west of Cape Sveti Liberan, on the rim of a fertile flysh zone. Chief occupations are farming, fishing and tourism. The mountain excursion area Sveti Ilija (961 m) lies to the northeast of Viganj.Viganj place with a long tradition in seafaring is today a beautiful orchard and botanical garden, protected from the northerly winds, turned to the ever warm south. Exotic fruit-trees and plants, brought by the famous seafarers of Peljesac from their journeys on the world seas, grow her Viganj is after Bol on the island of Brac, the most known windsurfing spot in Croatia. Because it is situated in the middle of a narrow channel between Peljesac and Korcula, the winds tend to blow twice as fast as it usually does in the Adriatic. Viganj also hosted World and European windsurfing championships. Wind conditions in Peljesac channel are great for Peljesac side as well as the island of Korcula side. Waves are not greater than 1,5 m and in bays up to 40 cm. Beaches on Peljesac peninsula are mostly rocky but you can find some very pretty sandy beaches as well.Viganj is situated on the regional road running along the island. First settlements on this area date back to the prehistoric and ancient periods. The parish church of St. Michael was erected in the Gothic period, expanded in 1760. - The shipowner Marko Krstelj had the Dominican monastery and church built in 1671. The church is a one-nave structure; the main altar is adorned with the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is also the wooden statue of Madonna with Child and a Renaissance bust of a saint. Peninsula is connected to the Croatian mainland with small strip of land, so Peljesac is almost an island itself. Peljesac has neat architecture as well as pleasurable scenery. Peljesac is well known for red wines Postup and Dingac, that are grown for hundreds of years in vineyards along south slopes of Peljesac Peninsula. Peljesac has a lot of good beaches, and beach Trstenica, near Orebic and Mokalo is a nice pebble beach that faces breathtaking views of Korcula Archipelago. Peljesac is connected by ferry from Ploce on Croatian mainland, as well as with ferry with Korcula Island that leaves from Orebic and journey takes about fifteen minutes. There are many walking paths found around beaches, coves and seaports where one can enjoy first hand beautiful surroundings, traditional culture and history on the Peljesac. Nature trails, cycling and mountaineering are all recommended. For those that like a challenge, climbing to the highest peak of the Peljesac, Mt Ilija (961 m) could be interesting. Tourists will be delighted with the clearly marked trails and will be rewarded with amazing panoramic views of the islands of Korcula, Mljet and Lastovo. Janjina, a village located in the central part of Peljecas peninsula, along the main road from Ston to Orebic. Viganj is a starting point for walkers around mountain Sveti Ilija too. It has a lot of suitable paths for mountain biking and hiking while enjoying a truly breathtaking views of Korcula archipelago. Viganj has it's windsurfing schools, diving school as well as a couple of good restaurants and cafe's and is in close vicinity of much larger Orebic, where additional facilities can be found. Viganj is connected with Korcula Old Town by regular 20-minutes boat service as well as by regular bus service to / from Orebic.
