Windsurfing near Waikowhai Park

Description

This spot is great if you seek consistent winds. Always a few knots more than everywhere else it seems. Good parking and rigging.

Getting out on a low volume board might be a bit tricky, you have to wade or swim a bit at high tide before you can water start properly as the beach is very sheltered. And because of the sheltered beach a windmeter is useless here. You'll have to look at the water.

At high tide you can make runs of miles. Great jumping in the channel just after the beach.

Wind direction

Best with West to South West and with outgoing tide (adds 2-3 knots to the apparent wind speed)

Hazards

At low tide runs are short, as it will quickly get too shallow for most fins. I.e. 400 metre runs or so at low tide.

If you completely run out of wind (not likely) or the wind shifts north of west, It can be very difficult to get back due to the fast flowing outgoing tide. Don't try and fight the tide, just try to get to shore as best you can and walk back.

Like many Auckland locations, there are oyster beds along the shore.
