Wild Horse Reservoir sits on a treeless plateau mid-way between Elko, Nevada and Mountain Home, Idaho. This is certainly one of the most remote sailing location in the contiguous US (the most remote?). The one time that I sailed there, it had steady 6.0 m2 conditions and not another person on the water; a few fishermen were waiting for the wind to die. This would be an interesting detour if you are driving from say California to Yellowstone and have an extra day or two to explore. The road (hwy 225) is paved.
